Film nights on bikes powered entirely by legs
16 & 17 December
Pedal power will be projecting a programme of short films Made in Reading over two evenings in December, as part of Light Up Reading, the finale of Reading’s Year of Culture.
On 16 and 17 December, film fans, cyclists and the curious are invited to come and power a special film night. Bikes and films are provided, all that is missing is the power to project them.
Real Time will be showing the programme of films in a marquee in Broad Street Mall’s South Court on Hosier Street between 6pm and 8pm on 16 and 17 December. The programme will include The Winter Giant’s procession through Reading, classic movie scenes acted out in Broad Street, behind the scenes at Henry I and Inside at Reading Prison and much more.
Zsuzsi Lindsay, Producer of Reading Year of Culture, said: “For the final weekend of Reading’s Year of Culture, we wanted to create something fully interactive. Wrap up warm but come ready to pedal – we ‘ve got 16 bikes to power this unique film night!”
Film Night on Bikes is sponsored by Reading’s Real Time, one of the UK’s leading exponents of the use of participatory media and digital art in community settings. The bikes are provided by Reaction, a social enterprise developing and providing hire of pedal/bike powered systems, stages, energy demonstrations and science games.
Clive Robertson, Creative Director, Real Time, said: “We’re really excited about being able to screen some of the great films made by local people as part of Reading’s Year of Culture. A cycle-powered cinema provides a unique opportunity for the audience to get actively involved. The short films include work by young people, community projects, artists and theatre groups, and there’s also the chance to view previously unseen behind the scenes footage.”
Graham Mountford, General Manager, Broad Street Mall, said: “The Broad Street Mall is really looking forward to welcoming this innovative mini cinema to South Court. We hope there are lots of people with plenty of puff so the films can be powered to the end!”
Film Night on Bikes is part of Light Up Reading, 17 days of special illuminations in Reading town centre, the finale of Reading Year of Culture.
