ARENA town centre arts programme ties up with Reading on Thames Festival
This summer’s town centre free arts programme will preview some of the great events lined up for September’s Reading on Thames Festival, starting this Saturday 11 August.
The ARENA programme is funded by Reading Business Improvement District (BID) as part of its work to make the town centre an attractive place to visit. This year, the BID has worked with the Reading on Thames Festival to commission two weekends of free arts and culture spectaculars.
On Saturday 11 August mass dance and street singing will take over Broad Street. Join Junction Dance as they brighten up Broad Street with a colourful explosion of street and contemporary dance. Set to a cut and paste mash up soundtrack, dancers will be improvising with paint and colour on a giant canvas. If you're feeling creative, you can join in too! The three professional funky street dancers will be dancing big, bold and bright with a hip hop vibe. They’ll be joined by members of the local dance network and members of the public will also be able to have a go.
Also on Saturday, vocalist Sohini Alam, who is part of the Reading on Thames festival opening event, GRRRL, will be performing in Broad Street. Sohini’s repertoire includes folk, modern and traditional song – she also works in schools to educate young people about the richness of Bangladeshi music, missing traditional styles with rock and pop.
On Sunday 2 September, one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras, London Mozart Players will be bringing classical music to Broad Street ahead of their Festival performance in Reading’s Concert Hall on 11 September. Catch their pop up performances throughout the day on 2 September from 2 - 5 PM. Also on 2 September, Cirque Bijou will be presenting a mass performance street parade to excite visitors to Broad Street (2-5pM). There will also be a chance to get involved in their Festival performance on Saturday 15 September in Caversham Court Gardens.
Bobby Lonergan, Reading Business Improvement District Manager, said “ARENA is part of the BID’s work to make Reading town centre an attractive place to live, work and visit. We are delighted to be working with the Reading on Thames Festival this year to bring two weekends of high quality arts and culture to Reading town centre. “
All the events are free. More details can be found here.
